False Ceiling and Lighting Design in Pune

Ceiling and lighting are usually treated as one decision, because in most Pune apartments the ceiling exists mainly to carry the light. Done well, the room feels calm and the fittings disappear. Done badly, you get a grid of downlights and a permanent glare.

Where a false ceiling earns its place

A false ceiling is worth building where it does a job: concealing air conditioning pipework and ducting, carrying cove or profile lighting, or bringing down an uncomfortably high ceiling over a dining table. It is not worth building across an entire flat by default, which is what a standard contractor quote often assumes.

Dropping the ceiling costs you height, and Pune apartments rarely have height to spare. We tend to keep bedrooms largely open with a shallow peripheral cove, and concentrate the built-up work where it is doing something — over the dining table, or along a television wall.

Gypsum, POP and slatted timber

Gypsum board on a metal frame is the standard for a reason: it is dimensionally stable, takes a flat paint finish, and does not crack the way older POP work does as it dries. POP still has a place for curves and mouldings where a board cannot follow the shape.

Timber slats have become the most requested ceiling detail in the homes we fit out. In Sachin Sharma's 4 BHK in Kondhwa the dining sits under a slatted ceiling that defines the zone without a wall, which is exactly the problem slats solve well in an open plan. They add warmth to a room that is otherwise all flat surfaces, and they break up sound in a way plain gypsum does not.

Layering the light

A room needs three kinds of light and most homes are given one. Ambient light fills the room and is what cove lighting does well. Task light is aimed at where you actually do something — the kitchen counter, a study surface, the side of a bed you read on. Accent light picks out a texture or an object, and is what makes a panelled wall or an inlay read at night.

In Aniket Marathe's duplex in Baner the staircase and television wall were built and lit as one continuous feature, so the light is doing structural work rather than being added at the end.

Smart home wiring and control

Colour temperature and control

Mixing colour temperatures across a home is the most common mistake we are called in to correct. Warm white, around 2700–3000K, suits living rooms and bedrooms. Neutral white suits kitchens and bathrooms where you need to see clearly. Keep it consistent within a room, always.

Plan the switching before the wiring is done, not after. Being able to run the cove alone in the evening, without the downlights, changes how a living room feels far more than any additional fitting would.
