The kitchen is usually the most-used and most expensive room in an Indian home, and the one where a builder's standard layout falls short soonest. We design and install modular kitchens across Pune and PCMC as part of a full home interior, or as a standalone project.

Getting the layout right first

Before any shutter material is discussed, the layout has to work. Most Pune apartments hand you a fixed plumbing point and a window, and the usable options narrow to an L, a parallel galley, or an L with an island or breakfast counter. The decision comes down to how the cook actually moves between the sink, the hob and the fridge, and whether the kitchen is closed or opens into the living room.

In Ashish Kadhane's 2 BHK in Balewadi we opened the kitchen into the living room, which suits a household that entertains and wants the cook included rather than shut away. In Chinmay Patil's 3 BHK in Kothrud the kitchen stayed closed and went cream and black, because the family cooks heavily and wanted the smell and noise contained.

Shutters, counters and what actually lasts

Most Pune kitchens we build land somewhere between minimalist and modern luxury, and the finish carries that more than the layout does. Shutter finish is also where budgets swing most. Laminate is the workhorse and survives Pune's humidity well. Acrylic gives the high-gloss, seamless look that photographs beautifully but shows fingerprints on dark colours. Membrane and PU are the middle ground, with PU allowing any colour you like at a premium.

For counters, quartz has largely replaced granite in the homes we fit out: it is non-porous, needs no sealing, and comes in consistent slabs. Granite is still the value choice and takes heat better. We steer clients away from marble on a working kitchen counter, whatever the showroom says, because turmeric and lemon will stain it.

Inside the cabinets, soft-close hinges and channels are worth the small premium; they are the parts you touch a hundred times a day. Tall units, pull-out baskets and a dedicated corner solution matter more to daily life than any visible finish.

Ventilation, lighting and the details people forget

A chimney sized to the hob and ducted properly out matters more than its brand. Under-cabinet lighting is not decoration in a kitchen: it removes the shadow the wall units cast on the counter you are working at. Provide sockets generously and above counter level, and place at least one where the mixer actually lives.

A modular kitchen inside a full home project is quoted as a line item so you can see exactly what the shell, the shutters, the counter and the hardware each cost. As a guide to the wider project, a full 2 BHK interior runs ₹12–16 lakh and a full 3 BHK ₹16–21 lakh, depending on scope, materials and finishes.
