Wardrobe and Storage Design in Pune

Storage is the single most common reason a home stops working. Builder wardrobes, where they exist at all, are shallow, badly divided and rarely reach the ceiling. We design and build wardrobes, walk-in closets and whole-home storage across Pune and PCMC.

Sliding or openable

This is the first decision and it is dictated by the room, not by taste. Sliding shutters need no clearance in front, which makes them the answer in a tight bedroom or where the bed sits close to the wardrobe. The cost is that you can only ever see half the wardrobe at once, and the bottom track collects dust.

Openable shutters give you the whole interior at a glance and cost less for the same run. They need around two feet of swing clearance. Where the room allows it, we default to openable and spend the saving on the internals.

Depth, height and internal layout

A wardrobe needs around 600mm of internal depth to hang a shirt without it touching the back. Anything shallower and clothes crease against the shutter. We take wardrobes to the ceiling as a matter of course: the loft above a standard-height unit is dead space that ends up holding suitcases and dust.

The internals are where a wardrobe is won or lost. A long hanging section for full-length clothes, a double-hang section for shirts and folded wear, drawers at waist height rather than at the floor, and a pull-out for accessories will serve better than any amount of visible finish. In Akshay and Radhika's home in Kharadi the guest bedroom wardrobe was arched to match the foyer detailing, but the internals were still planned around what the room is actually used for.

Finishes that hold up

Fluted and grooved shutter profiles have been the dominant look in Pune for the last few years, and they photograph well, but they need a light hand: across a whole bedroom wall they can overwhelm. In Chinmay Patil's master bedroom in Kothrud the sage fluted wardrobe is the only textured surface in the room, which is what lets it read as a feature rather than noise.

Mirror on a wardrobe shutter earns its place in a small bedroom, both for dressing and for the depth it adds. Laminate remains the practical default; acrylic and PU suit statement pieces where the room can carry them.

Bespoke furniture beyond wardrobes

The same carpenters build the rest of the loose and fitted furniture — customized beds sized to the room, study desks, dining benches and console units. Because it is made for your plan rather than bought off a shelf, it fits the space you actually have.

Storage beyond the bedroom

The wardrobes get the attention, but the storage that changes daily life is usually elsewhere: a full-height utility unit near the kitchen, a shoe and key drop at the entry so the foyer never accumulates, seating with storage under it, and a planned place for luggage. We plan these at the same time as the wardrobes so nothing gets left to a carpenter's afterthought.
